Records of the name begin in the 900s and it is believed to derive from Early English terms for a battle-axe and a post, marking a place of assembly. Late in that century Barnstaple had assumed local defence from Pilton and coins were struck there before the Norman Conquest. The 1086 Domesday Book describes it as a borough and names Geoffrey de Montbray as holder of the barony centred on Barnstaple Castle. Juhel de Totnes founded Barnstaple Priory by 1107. A market is on record from 1274 and from the 14th century the town was licensed to export wool. Five ships went from its port against the Spanish Armada in 1588. Silting of the harbour later let Bideford take over trade. Of 372 listed buildings, the Grade I ones include Long Bridge, Penrose Almhouses, Bull House and the Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin.
