A short history of Barnoldswick
Barnoldswick dates to Anglo Saxon times. The Domesday Book records it as Bernulfesuuic, meaning Bernulf's settlement, the ending being an old spelling of wick, a term for a settlement and especially a dairy farm. In 1147 monks from Fountains Abbey founded a Cistercian monastery here but left after six years with building unfinished. Failed crops and local resentment over their meddling in church matters drove them out. They went on to build Kirkstall Abbey then came back ten years later to build the Church of St Mary-le-Ghyll. Around the same time William de Percy II gave Crooks House in northern Bracewell to the monks behind Sawley Abbey. The place stayed a small village for centuries. Once the Leeds and Liverpool Canal and then the railway reached it the existing woollen industry grew and it became a major cotton town. Bancroft Mill was the last mill built and its steam engine survives. Thirteen listed buildings stand near the centre. Coates Hall and the Independent Methodist Church are both Grade II*.
