A short history of Barnard Castle
Before 1066 the upper part of Teesdale formed an Anglo-Norse estate with Gainford at its centre, held as security by the Earls of Northumberland. After Bishop Walcher of Durham was murdered in 1080 the Norman overlords laid waste to the surrounding land. Following a further rebellion in 1095 William II divided the earldom into baronies and gave the Lordship of Gainford to Guy de Balliol. His successor Bernard I de Balliol rebuilt the castle earthworks in stone in the later 12th century, which gave the town its name. The castle passed through the Balliol family to Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick, then to Richard III through his wife Anne Neville and fell into ruin within a century of his death. Wool weaving led local industry in the 18th century before thread spinning took over. John Bowes of Streatlam Castle bred the 1853 Triple Crown winner West Australian and founded the Bowes Museum with his wife. The centre has 165 listed buildings, with the castle remains, Market Cross and Bowes Museum at Grade I.
