A short history of Banbury

Evidence of an Iron Age settlement with round buildings, dating to around 200 BC, has been found in the Hennef Way area and a Roman villa later stood at Wykham Park. The Saxons settled the area from the late 5th century and Banbury was a local centre by the mid-6th century. The name may come from a Saxon chieftain called Banna or from an Old English word for a killer, joined to a word for settlement. The Domesday Book of 1086 records it as Banesberie, assessed at 50 hides, with the Bishop of Lincoln as its holder and three mills on his demesne lands. Alexander, Bishop of Lincoln, began building Banbury Castle in 1135. Medieval prosperity rested on wool. The earliest record of Neithrop, a hamlet, dates from the 13th century. The castle was besieged in the Civil War of the 1640s then demolished. The Oxford Canal reached the town on 30 March 1778 and the railway came in 1850. Of 211 listed buildings nearby, the Church of St Mary is Grade I and ten are Grade II*, including Banbury Cross.
