A short history of Axminster
The settlement dates to Celtic times around 300 BC. Two Roman roads crossed here and a fort stood at Woodbury Farm to the south. It was recorded as Ascanmynster in the late 9th century and as Aixeministra in the Domesday Book of 1086. The name means a monastery or large church by the River Axe. A charter of 1210 gave the right to a weekly cattle market. Thomas Whitty began making carpets at Court House in 1755 and The George Hotel opened as a coaching inn in 1760. The market moved to Trinity Square in 1834 and the Dorset exclave of the parish joined Devon in 1844. Within half a mile of the centre stand 54 listed buildings. Three are Grade II*: Oak House, the Church of St Mary and the premises of G C Bateman.
