A short history of Atherton
Traces of a Roman road and of Bronze Age settlement have turned up in and near Atherton. Following the Anglo-Saxon invasion the land formed part of Warrington manor and after the Norman Conquest it became a township within the ancient parish of Leigh. Records of 1212 and 1242 give the name as Aderton, with Atherton appearing in 1259. Coal mining and nail making are linked with the place from the 14th century and Alexander Naylor paid tax on his goods in 1332. The Atherton family held the manor and two of its members fought at Agincourt in 1415. Richard Atherton started building Atherton Hall in 1723 and the family's tie to the township ended with his death in 1726. The hall was pulled down in 1824. Nut and bolt manufacture began in 1843. Of 14 listed buildings near the centre, three are Grade II*: Alder House, Chanters Farmhouse and Chowbent Unitarian Chapel.
