Henry III granted a charter in 1219 for a weekly Thursday market. A variant spelling, Hampthull, appears in 1381. In the 15th century Sir John Cornwall, later Lord Fanhope, built Ampthill Castle with ransoms following Agincourt. Catherine of Aragon lived there between 1531 and the annulment of her marriage in 1533. Henry VIII often visited the castle. An Act of 1542 created the Honour of Ampthill across 45 parishes. The Dukes of Bedford bought it piece by piece over the period 1730 to 1881. The 2nd Earl of Upper Ossory remodelled the town centre in the mid-1780s with a market place, water pump and clock tower. Eighty-two Grade II listed buildings stand near the centre.
