Farming dominated the Middle Ages before mining and iron working grew. Alfreton Hall was built around 1750. In the 18th century the town led Derbyshire in coal mining. Turnpike Acts from 1759 made it a coaching centre and the Cromford Canal opened in 1793. The population of the area rose from 2,301 in 1801 to 21,232 in 1931. The last Lord of Alfreton, William Palmer-Morewood, died in 1957. Eighteen listed buildings stand near the centre, led by the Grade II* Church of St Martin.
