A short history of Abertillery

The name Abertillery refers to the mouth of the River Tyleri and Tyleri probably comes from a personal name. Artefacts found locally reach back to the Bronze Age. St Illtyd's Church dates to the 13th century and probably has origins in the 6th. Nearby St Illtyd's Motte, a Norman castle mound, was probably destroyed in 1233. Northeast of the church lie the ruins of two later castles that probably date to the 14th century. In the 17th century Tŷ Nest Llewellyn gave nonconformists a refuge from religious persecution. The local Baptist church traces its roots there. Before industry arrived the area was farmland dotted across the ancient parish of Aberystruth. Deep coal mining began in 1843 and reading rooms were set up in 1856. Abertillery Urban District Council formed in 1877 and took in Six Bells, Cwmtillery, Brynithel, Aberbeeg and Llanhilleth. Thomas Powell took over Tillery Colliery in 1882.
