A short history of Pencoed
The earliest sign of habitation is the nearby cave Ogof y Pebyll or Ogof Coed-y-Mwstwr, a scheduled monument seemingly occupied in the Neolithic or Bronze Age. Worked flint flakes and mammal teeth have been found there. A 1303 deed of Ewenny Priory records the name as Penkoyt and it appears as Pencoyd in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The name probably shortens pen-y-coed, meaning the head or end of the wood. Woodland covered the area and few people lived there until the eighteenth century. In 1729 a map marked coal pits while coal, lime, timber and stone all helped the village grow. Isambard Kingdom Brunel's route for the South Wales Railway influenced the hamlets of Pencoed and Penprysg and a station was built between them in 1856. The two hamlets became the village centre. Six Grade II listed buildings stand nearby including the Church of St David.
