A short history of Pontypridd
The Welsh name Pont y tŷ pridd means a bridge beside the earthen house and refers to successive timber bridges over the River Taff. Before coal and iron industries arrived the area was a hamlet of farms with Treforest as the main settlement. In 1756 William Edwards built the stone Old Bridge on his fourth attempt, then the longest single-span stone arch in the world. The place was called Newbridge until the 1860s. In 1857 Victoria Bridge, funded by public subscription, was added beside it. Where three valleys meet the town handled Rhondda coal and Merthyr Tydfil iron moved first on the Glamorganshire Canal and later on the Taff Vale Railway. It hosted the National Eisteddfod in 1893 and in 1894 an explosion at Albion Colliery in Cilfynydd killed 290 colliers. Within a mile of the centre stand 80 listed buildings and Pontypridd Bridge is graded I.
