A short history of Neath

The name Neath comes from Nedd, the Welsh name of the River Neath, which is Celtic or pre-Celtic in origin. The Romans built an auxiliary fort on the river's west bank around 74 AD and a 2nd century itinerary lists it as Nido. The garrison left twice, first around 125 AD and then around 170 AD, with the last Roman withdrawal coming around 320 AD. St Illtyd founded a settlement at Llantwit, where the church was enlarged in Norman times. Henry II, John and Edward I visited Neath Castle. Iron, steel and tinplate works arrived in the 18th century, alongside coal mining, canals and railways, with the Mackworth family of the Gnoll Estate prominent in this growth. The National Eisteddfod was held in 1918, 1934 and 1994. Of 92 listed buildings nearby, eight are Grade II*, including Neath Castle and the churches of St Illtyd and St Thomas.
