A short history of Pontypool
Pontypool takes its Welsh name, Pont-y-pŵl, from a bridge linked to a pool in the Afon Lwyd. Iron working began nearby in the early fifteenth century with a bloomery furnace at Pontymoile. From 1536 Monkswood had a blast furnace in operation. Richard Hanbury developed forges and furnaces across the area from the 1570s and an ironworks opened in what became Pontypool Park around 1575. The town grew in earnest in the seventeenth century and in 1690 royal approval was given for a market each week and fairs three times a year, which made the village an official town. Rolling of iron sheets began at the Pontypool Park works in 1697 under Major John Hanbury and tinplate followed from about 1706. The Allgood brothers were producing Japanware by 1732. Japanning had ceased by the mid-nineteenth century. Of the 65 listed buildings near the centre, four are Grade II*: the Shell Grotto, Crane Street Baptist Church, The Valley Inheritance Museum and the Entrance Gates to Pontypool Park.
