A short history of Llanelli

The name Llanelli means St Elli's Parish. Land now within Parc Howard held an Iron Age hill fort called Bryn-Caerau and evidence points to five hill forts in the wider area. A Roman camp was also built nearby and abandoned soon after. In the early medieval period a saint named Elli is said to have founded a church beside the Afon Lliedi and early Welsh texts place the mother church of Carnwyllion at Llanelli. Rhys Ieuanc besieged and burned Carnwyllion Castle in 1215. The church standing today goes back to the 14th century. Llanelli industrialised in the early 19th century as a centre of tinplate production with coal exported through three small docks. The Stepney, Raby, Howard and Cowell families helped shape its growth. Extensive restoration of the church was completed in 1911 and the spelling Llanelly became Llanelli in 1966. There are 96 listed buildings nearby including Llanelly House and 20, 22 and 24 Vaughan St / Bridge St at Grade I.
