A short history of Pembroke

Pembroke takes its name from the cantref of Penfro, which joins Welsh words for head or end and for land; the name has been read as Land's End or headland. The Normans founded the stone castle in 1093 at the western tip of a peninsula; it became the seat of the Earls of Pembroke and the birthplace of Henry VII. Arnulf de Montgomery founded Monkton Priory in 1098 for the Benedictines. A tide mill was granted to the Knights Templar in 1199. The castle's final extension about 1254 was followed by the growth of the town and the building of walls. During the Civil War Oliver Cromwell briefly based himself at the York Tavern at the end of the siege. Of 131 listed buildings four are Grade I: Pembroke Castle, the Priory Church of Saint Nicholas, Monkton Old Hall and the Parish Church of Saint Mary.
