A short history of Merthyr Tydfil
The Romans built an auxiliary fortress at Penydarren in 74 CE and left it by about 120 CE. Tradition links the name Merthyr Tydfil to Tydfil, a daughter of Brychan, said to have been killed by pagans around 480 CE and later honoured as a martyr, with a church raised at her traditional burial site. By 1093 Norman barons held only the lowlands and Morlais Castle also arose in these years, lying two miles to the north. Merthyr was little more than a village for a long time. From the late 1740s land was leased for iron smelting and the Dowlais, Plymouth, Cyfarthfa and Penydarren ironworks followed. The first steam-powered railway journey ran from Penydarren in 1804. In 1851 Wales was found to be the first industrialised nation. The area has 120 listed buildings, among them Cyfarthfa Castle and its School, both Grade I.
