A short history of Welshpool

The Welsh name Y Trallwng refers to marshy or sinking ground. St Cynfelin is reputed to have founded the churches of St Mary and St Cynfelin in the 5th and 6th centuries. In 1212 the town briefly became capital of Powys Wenwynwyn after its prince fled Mathrafal. St Mary's Church was first built about 1250. In 1284 the territory became the marcher Lordship of Powys. Forces of Owain Glyndŵr devastated the town in 1400 and Adam of Usk was priest at St Mary's in 1411. Bishop William Morgan, who rendered the Bible into Welsh, was vicar there from 1575 to 1579. An octagonal cockpit was built in the early 18th century. The English name Pool became Welshpool in 1835 and the cockpit stayed in use until 1849. The Town Hall was completed in 1874. St Mary's is the only Grade I among 198 listed buildings near the centre.
