A short history of Wrexham

Flint tools show people were active around Wrexham in the Mesolithic period. Bronze Age burial mounds and Iron Age hill-forts lie to the west. Under Roman rule the area belonged to the Cornovii, with a civilian settlement at Plas Coch and afterwards it fell within the kingdom of Powys. Mercian advances in the eighth century produced Wat's Dyke and Offa's Dyke. Wrexham was probably founded then, its name most likely meaning Wryhtel's river meadow. Welsh kings of Powys retook the area in the 11th century, so as part of the lordship of Maelor it is absent from the Domesday Book of 1086. A castle at Wristlesham is recorded in 1161 and the present spelling appears in 1186. Wrexham grew as a trading and administrative town and for a time in the 17th century was the largest settlement in Wales. Coal and lead mining expanded from the 18th century. The Parish Church of St Giles is Grade I, among 160 listed buildings near the centre.
