His son Edward, later Edward II, was born there in April 1284, the year Caernarfon became a borough. The investiture of the Prince of Wales took place at the castle in 1911 and again in 1969. The spelling Caernarvon was adopted in 1926 and changed to Caernarfon in 1975. There are 33 listed buildings nearby, including the Grade I Church of St Peblig and Segontium is a scheduled monument.
