A short history of Hayle
People have settled around the Hayle Estuary since the Bronze Age and an Iron Age fort stood on the hill above Carnsew Pool. The lives of Saint Samson and Saint Petroc suggest the estuary was an established port by the end of the 5th century. The Domesday survey of 1086 records the manor of Connerton, held by the King, as including the estuary, with scattered farmsteads but no town. In 1130 Phillack Church and nearby dwellings were recorded as "Egloshayle". Angarrack had a tin smelter from 1704, while Hayle landed coal. John "Merchant" Curnow built the first modern quay in the 1740s and in 1758 the Cornish Copper Company set up a smelter at Copperhouse Creek. Its slag was cast into blocks used in local buildings. The area has 57 listed buildings, with Grade II* for Bodriggy House, the Church of St Elwyn and the Church of St Phillack.
