A short history of Kingsbridge
A bridge standing by the 10th century at the latest linked the royal estates of Alvington and Chillington and gave the town its name, Kyngysbrygge. The Abbot of Buckfast received permission for a market in 1219 and the settlement was a borough by 1238. Neighbouring Dodbrooke gained its own market in 1257 and was a borough by 1319, while Kingsbridge later grew to include it. St Edmund's Church was enlarged and reconsecrated around 1414. The manor stayed with the abbot until the Dissolution of the Monasteries, when it passed to Sir William Petre. A map of 1586 recorded land belonging to Sir John Petre. Thomas Crispin founded the grammar school in 1670 and The Shambles was rebuilt in 1796. The town mills became a woollen manufactory in 1798. Through the 19th century shipbuilding, coastal trade and a tannery operated here. Of 116 listed buildings near the centre, the churches of St Edmund and St Thomas Becket are Grade I.
