A short history of St Austell
The town is named after Austol, a Cornish saint of the 6th century. A Vatican manuscript from the 10th century lists Cornish saints and some authorities read it as a roll of parishes from about 900 AD, which would make St Austell a parish by then. Domesday Book of 1086 does not mention it, though records show a church there in 1169 and a dedication by Bishop Bronescombe in 1262. Around 1542 John Leland found nothing notable there apart from the parish church. Oliver Cromwell later granted a charter for a Friday market. Significant tin mining in the 18th century, notably at nearby Polgooth, turned the village into a town and the Land's End to Plymouth road came through around 1760. China clay took over from the mid-19th century and drew in families from failing metal mines. By 1839 the town had 37 non-conformist chapels. Within 0.9 miles of the centre there are 54 listed buildings, with Holy Trinity Church the only one at Grade I.
