A short history of Exmouth
Byzantine coins from the reign of Anastasius I, dated to around 498 to 518, turned up on the beach in 1970. Littleham and Withycombe Raleigh, the two parishes that now make up the town, go back to before the Saxons arrived and the name Exmouth reflects its place at the mouth of the River Exe. Exmouth Point was once called Lydwicnaesse, meaning "the point of the Bretons". In 1240 the ferry landing, then known as Pratteshuthe, passed to the citizens of Exeter and their mayor and the settlement began to grow in the 13th century around a few farms, the landing and a windmill. Sir Walter Raleigh began several voyages from the harbour. Algerian corsairs raided the coast in the mid-17th century. In the 18th century Exmouth became the oldest seaside resort in Devon, visited by Lady Byron and her daughter Ada Lovelace. A new dock opened in 1825 and further docks designed by Eugenius Birch followed in 1868. The railway arrived in 1861, bringing mass tourism and much of the present layout dates from then. Of 110 listed buildings near the centre, three are Grade II*: The Barn and the parish churches of St Margaret and St Andrew and of the Holy Trinity.
