A short history of Seaford

Seaford was a major medieval port for southern England and counted as a limb of Hastings within the Cinque Ports confederation. French attackers burned the town several times between 1350 and 1550 and sediment silted up the harbour. In the 16th century local people were nicknamed "cormorants" or "shags" for plundering vessels wrecked in the bay and a legend says false lights set on the cliffs sometimes lured ships aground. William Levett served as bailiff in 1620 and 1624 and he died in 1635. The Old Town Hall in South Street housed the borough council, which could elect two members of parliament until the Reform Act 1832. The railway to Lewes and London revived the town in the 19th century and it became a small seaside resort. Of the 54 listed buildings near the centre, the Parish Church of St Leonard is Grade I and the Parish Church of St Peter is Grade II*. Scheduled monuments include a medieval crypt in Church Street and Martello tower no 74 on the Esplanade.
