A short history of Bognor Regis
Bognor appears in a document of AD 680 as Bucgan ora, meaning Bucge's shore or landing place and its name numbers among the earliest Anglo-Saxon place names recorded in Sussex. For centuries it was a fishing and smuggling village with a small port on the Aldingbourne Rife. In the late 18th century Sir Richard Hotham developed it as a seaside resort and renamed it Hothamton, a name that did not last. Growth was slow until the railway arrived in 1864. King George V recuperated at Craigweil House in Aldwick and the town became Bognor Regis by royal consent that July. Billy Butlin's first attractions came in the early 1930s, ahead of the holiday camp that opened in 1960. Of 109 listed buildings nearby, The Dome is Grade I.
