Otteham Court and its Chapel remain from that time. In the 18th century a turnpike route between London and Eastbourne took shape. Until the 1840s Polegate was a minor settlement in Hailsham parish, but the line from Lewes to Hastings and later branches to Eastbourne and Hailsham made it an important junction. A freight terminal served Hailsham and local brickmaking while the town grew partly to house railway employees. A church school opened in 1851. St John's Church opened on 10 November 1876 on land given by Mr Fuller-Meyrick of the Brightling Park Estate. Polegate Windmill is the one listed building near the centre, at Grade II*.
