A short history of Havant

Remains from the Mesolithic and Neolithic periods have been found in Havant, along with Roman buildings near St Faith's Church and in Langstone Avenue. Around 935 the place was called Hamanfunta, meaning the spring of Hama, after a spring close to the churchyard. By 1086, the year of the Domesday Book, it was a village of about 100 people. In 1200 the monks of Winchester Cathedral gained permission to run a market. The chancel of St Faith's dates from the early 13th century. A yearly fair tied to Saint Faith's feast day was being held around 1450. A fire in 1760 destroyed most of the town but left the church and the adjacent cottages. Roads were then widened, which eased the passage of stagecoaches. Hall Place was rebuilt in 1796 and a railway station opened in 1847. Of 69 listed buildings near the centre, the Church of St Faith and The Elms are Grade II*.
