The place was recorded as Cerden in 1065 and as Cerdre in the Domesday Book of 1086, a name meaning a house on rough ground. The Bishop of Wells held it. A charter from the bishop in 1234 marked out the town and its burgage plots. Fire destroyed most of Chard in 1577 and it was largely rebuilt. In 1685 the Duke of Monmouth was proclaimed king there and twelve of his rebels were later executed. Lace manufacture expanded after 1820 and John Stringfellow demonstrated engine-powered flight in 1848. Chard has 156 listed buildings including two at Grade I, the Church of St Mary the Virgin and a group on Fore Street. Grade II* buildings include Essex House and Monmouth House.
