A short history of Denmead

In 1316 Denmead lay with the Bishop of Winchester and was let to several tenants. It was called a manor in 1449 when William Wayte held it. After his grandson died the lands were shared among relatives. Inheritance divided the property further until Henry Kennett became owner in 1831. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners were Lords of the Manor in 1908. Once part of Hambledon parish and known as Barn Green, the village was widely scattered and included Worlds End, Furzeley, Anmore and Denmead Mill. Its own identity came with the creation of All Saints parish in 1880. In the 19th century it was known for cockfighting. The civil parish took its present form in 1932. Before D-Day American and Canadian troops camped in local forests and Creech Wood held a prisoner of war camp. Four Grade II listed buildings stand near the centre.
