A short history of Horndean

The name Horndean comes from the Old English word for valley and most likely means a valley by a horn-shaped hill, probably Horndean Down. Another reading links the first part to the dormouse. The settlement grew in the early Middle Ages because it was a staging post on the Portsmouth to London road. In 1836 Sir Charles Napier Senior bought The Grove and renamed it Merchistoun Hall after his former home in Falkirk. The hall is now Grade II listed. Gales Brewery operated from 1850 until 2006. A Victorian workhouse for the local poor was demolished in 1982. Trams ran until 1935. The Hazleton estate was built on the hall's former grounds in the early 1960s and the A3(M) followed in the 1970s. Fifteen listed buildings stand near the centre including the Church of All Saints at Grade II*.
