Ilminster appears in documents from 725 and is also mentioned in a charter of 995 from Æthelred the Unready to Muchelney Abbey. The Domesday Book of 1086 records it as Ileminstre, a name formed from Old English words for a church and the River Isle. By then it was a flourishing community with the right to hold a weekly market. The town contains buildings of a sixteenth-century grammar school. In 1645, during the English Civil War, a skirmish took place in the town when Edward Massie's parliamentary force met Lord Goring's Royalists, each trying to secure the bridges before the Battle of Langport. The Chard Canal, meant to link the town to the River Parrett, was never completed. Within 0.4 miles of the centre stand 137 listed buildings. The Parish Church of St Mary is Grade I and the Grade II* buildings include 28 and 29 Court Barton, The Chantry and the George Hotel.
