Bishop's Waltham began as an Anglo-Saxon community some time from 450 to 550 AD. Its name joins words for forest and settlement with a reference to the bishop. In 904 King Edward the Elder exchanged the estate with Denewulf, Bishop of Winchester, for land at Portchester. Danes burnt the settlement in 1001. The Domesday Book of 1086 records about 600 people in 115 households, the 11th largest settlement in Hampshire. Henry de Blois built a new church in 1136 and began the palace in 1158. Oliver Cromwell ordered its destruction during the Civil War. After Trafalgar about 200 French officers including Admiral Villeneuve were held in the town. Arthur Helps founded the clay company behind the town's brickworks in 1862 and the works closed in 1957.
