A short history of Burgess Hill

The London to Brighton Way, a Roman road, ran through the area, though nothing suggests the Romans settled there. Burgess Hill developed from Clayton, Keymer and Ditchling, three parishes that each appear in the Domesday Book. From the fourteenth century or earlier a Midsummer Fair took place on the common every 24 June and the place was called St John's Common until the nineteenth century. Its present name derives from John Burgeys, who appears in tax rolls. A community existed by the Elizabethan period and brick and tile making was flourishing by the early seventeenth century. The Keymer part of the common was enclosed in 1828 and the railway to Brighton opened in 1841. The Clayton part was enclosed in 1855. Between 1850 and 1880 the settlement grew into a town of 4,500 residents. Hoadley's store opened in 1857, Wynnstay was built in 1876 for Sampson Copestake and the Victoria Pleasure Gardens opened in 1897. The last fair was held in 1913. Thirteen listed buildings stand near the centre, including the Parish Church of St John and Clayton Priory, both Grade II*.
