A short history of Liphook

Chiltlee Manor, south of Bramshott Manor, was recorded under William the Conqueror as a royal holding with four tenants and ploughland for two teams, valued at fifty three shillings. The first mention of Liphook itself comes in 1281, when the Bramshott manor court rolls name Robert of Lupe. John Maunser held a tenancy there when he died in 1428 and John Speed's map of 1607 gives the name as Lippocke. Coaching was firmly established by 1660 and Samuel Pepys stayed at Lippock in 1668. A London to Portsmouth coach service began in 1688 and the Royal Anchor inn grew alongside other 17th century buildings in The Square. Turnpiking through Liphook started in 1749. The railway arrived in 1859 and reduced the long-distance coaching trade. Mary Anne Robb built Chiltlee Place in 1880. Sixteen listed buildings stand near the centre, all of them Grade II.
