Iron Age settlement has been found near Brislands Lane. King Cenwalh of the West Saxons gave the land to the bishopric at Winchester and King Ine confirmed this in 701 in a disputed charter. Lymington, a farmstead, was recorded in 1307 as Lenynton but had vanished by the 15th century. Hawthorn, recorded in 1424 as Horethornes, has been settled continuously since the 1500s. Around 1550 a survey of the Manor of Alresford named the spot Fowremarkes, where the tithings of Medstead, Ropley, Farringdon and Chawton met. A boundary stone there was recorded in 1759. An Alton to Winchester turnpike opened in the 18th century. From 1894 developers sold plots, including over 140 at Lymington Park Estate in 1896.
