A short history of Bordon
Bordon lies within the royal Woolmer Forest and developed as a military area rather than as a market town. The Highland Light Infantry marked out Bordon Camp in 1899 under the direction of Royal Engineers. Work was interrupted by the Second Boer War and the army occupied the camp from 1903. The Somersetshire Light Infantry came back from South Africa to Quebec barracks in April of that year and the 2nd Battalion Devonshire Regiment reached St. Lucia Barracks in June. The Canadian Army was based at the camp during both world wars and left concrete slabs where tanks and armoured cars were parked. The Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers trained soldiers in the town until 2016. One Grade II listed building stands near the centre, Chase Farmhouse.
