Saxons came to live in the area during the seventh century. Queen Ælfthryth founded a Benedictine abbey there in 979. In 1086 Domesday Book entered the place as Amblesberie or Ambresberie, counting 111 households alongside eight mills, with Wilton Abbey holding the largest estate. Henry II replaced the abbey with a priory in 1177 and Eleanor of Provence retired there in 1286. The priory ended in 1540. The mansion Amesbury Abbey was completed in 1661 and John Rose founded two schools in 1677. Sir Edmund Antrobus bought the estate in 1824 and rebuilt the mansion from 1834 to 1840. Growth followed the opening of Boscombe Down's experimental establishment in 1939.
