A short history of Durrington

The area was occupied from Neolithic times though perhaps not continuously and the parish holds the Neolithic sites of Durrington Walls and Woodhenge. The name comes from Old English and means a farm or settlement linked to a man called Deor. Two estates appear in the Domesday Book of 1086 with ploughland for a single team and meadow of 5 acres. West End manor belonged to the king's Amesbury estate until 1120 while East End was privately held. In 1399 West End was given to Winchester College. A fire in 1405 destroyed most of West End. The college cut rents in 1461 after years of trouble collecting them. In 1610 East End Manor gained a new range that sheltered Catholic priests during the Reformation. In 1676 it had 334 people. Nineteen listed buildings stand near the centre: 18 Grade II and the Church of All Saints at Grade II*.
