Deal is recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Addelam. A record of 1158 gives Dela and one of 1275 gives Dale and the name derives from an Old English word meaning valley. Deal joined the Cinque Ports in 1278 as a limb port and by the late 1200s it functioned as a port. In 1495 supporters of the pretender Perkin Warbeck attempted a landing and local men loyal to Henry VII repelled them on the beach. Henry VIII later had Sandown, Deal and Walmer castles built to guard against naval attack. A Naval Yard was established in 1672 and Deal Town Hall was completed in 1803. The Royal Marine Depot was set up in 1861 and Middle Street became Kent's first conservation area in 1968. The area has 99 listed buildings, with four at Grade II*: Queen Anne House and the churches of St Leonards, St Nicholas and St Mary The Blessed Virgin.
