A short history of East Horsley
East Horsley appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 with two manors listed under Horslei, the chief one held by Lanfranc, Archbishop of Canterbury. The entry lists 3 hides and 1½ virgates, 8½ ploughs and woodland worth 50 hogs and it rendered £5 a year. The Bishop's Manor appears to have stayed with the bishopric of Exeter across the medieval period. William Currie bought the property in 1784 and over 44 years rebuilt most houses, established the school and restored the church. The East Horsley Inclosure Act 1800 let him enclose most of Horsley Common. After Currie died in 1829 the 1st Earl of Lovelace acquired the property and built fifteen bridges for timber carts. In the early 1900s the 3rd Earl sold fields under restrictive covenants. The area has 11 listed buildings, all Grade II.
