A short history of Sevenoaks

The name appears as Seouenaca in 1100, taken from Old English words meaning seven oaks and the original trees stood in Knole Park. Few records survive from before the 13th century, when the town was given market status. In the Middle Ages religious orders ran two hospitals for old or sick people, especially pilgrims. William Sevenoke, a foundling raised in the town who became a merchant and Mayor of London, founded a school and almshouses in 1432 as thanks to the town. Queen Elizabeth I granted the school letters patent in 1560. In 1456 Thomas Bourchier, Archbishop of Canterbury, bought the Knole estate and built Knole House. In 1902 seven oaks were planted at The Vine cricket ground to mark the coronation of King Edward VII and six fell in the Great Storm of 1987. A railway accident near the town on 24 August 1927 killed 13 passengers. The area has 235 listed buildings, 12 of them Grade II*, including Sevenoaks School, the Almshouses and The Chantry.
