A short history of Weston-super-Mare
Worlebury Camp, an Iron Age hillfort, is the oldest structure in the area and rock-cut burials of that period lie on the hill's southern slope. A small Romano-British farmstead or hamlet later stood near South Terrace. The name joins Old English words for west and settlement. The Domesday Book of 1086 does not name Weston but records Ashcombe and Milton and Weston's valued property was probably counted with Ashcombe. Defences followed the Norman Conquest at Worle and Ashcombe. The place was called Weston-juxta-Mare before 1348 and was recorded as Weston on the More in 1610. The Pigott family held the manor from 1695. Early in the 19th century Weston had about 30 houses. The first hotel opened in 1810 and a sea water bath house followed on Knightstone Island in 1820. The church was rebuilt in 1824. Sixty-one listed buildings stand near the centre, led by the Grade I Parish Church Of St Paul and the Grade II* Church Of All Saints.
