A short history of Sittingbourne

After the Roman invasion of AD 43 Watling Street ran through the settlement, yet Milton Regis served as the local administrative centre and Sittingbourne remained a minor hamlet. The Domesday Book of 1086 gives Sittingbourne no entry of its own, only a note attached to Milton Regis showing 393 households. Pilgrims travelling to Canterbury after Thomas Becket was murdered in 1170 made the town a useful stopping place. The parish church of St Michael goes back to the thirteenth century. Henry V stayed at the Lyon on his return from Agincourt and the Rose Inn was put up in 1708. Brick and paper making grew once the railway arrived in 1858. Of 95 listed buildings the Parish Church of the Holy Trinity is the only one at Grade I.
