A short history of Bath
Human activity on the hills around Bath dates from the Mesolithic period and Solsbury Hill held an Iron Age hill fort. Around 60 AD the Romans built baths and a temple at the hot spring that the Britons had already dedicated to Sulis. They named the settlement Aquae Sulis. Defensive walls probably followed in the third century. The baths fell into disrepair once Roman rule ended. The West Saxons took the town in 577 and a monastery was most probably established by Osric, King of the Hwicce, in 675. Offa of Mercia took it over in 781. King Alfred later re-planned the town. King Edgar received his crown at Bath Abbey in 973. The abbey building was reconstructed during the twelfth and sixteenth centuries. Beau Nash led social life in the city from 1705 until 1761 while John Wood the Elder laid out many streets and squares. Jane Austen was a resident of Bath during the first years of the 1800s. Within 1.7 miles of the centre stand 2000 listed buildings and 91 are Grade I, among them the Grand Pump Room and the Holburne Museum.
