A short history of Yatton
Evidence of an Iron Age hill fort has been found at Cadbury Hill, along with a Roman villa, a temple, a hoard of coins and older Christian burial grounds. Where the name Yatton comes from is not known for certain, though it may derive from an Anglo-Saxon word for a settlement beside a track. The Domesday Book records the place as Lature and the parish lay within the Winterstoke Hundred. Standing on slightly higher drained ground among moorland, Yatton was well established by Norman times. St Mary's Church dates from the 14th century. In the 1840s the Bristol & Exeter Railway opened and the station was renamed Yatton Junction when the Clevedon branch opened in 1847. Further branches followed in 1869 and 1901. The war memorial was erected in 1922 on the site of The Pound. Of 26 listed buildings nearby, the Church of St Mary and The Old Rectory with Rectory Cottage are Grade I.
Sport and leisure
Yatton Bowls Club has a bowls pitch in the town, with equestrian and skateboarding facilities also nearby. Rock Road Park and Hangstones are the named parks and open spaces, alongside a number of children's playgrounds.
