A short history of Wokingham

Wokingham means the home of Wocca's people, Wocca apparently being a Saxon chieftain. The town gained a market right in 1219 and hosted the courts of Windsor Forest. The Bishop of Salisbury laid out roads and rentable plots and in 1258 he bought the right to hold three fairs yearly. A bell foundry worked from the 14th to the 16th centuries and silk was produced in Tudor times. A 1661 bequest began annual bull-baiting in the Market Place. The Corporation prohibited the practice in 1821 and Parliament banned it in 1833. By Victorian days the name had shifted to Oakingham and an acorn with oak leaves, granted in the 19th century, became the town's heraldic charge. Of 141 listed buildings, Henry Lucas Hospital and its water pumps is Grade I.
