A short history of Shinfield
Anglo-Saxon settlers called the place Shining Field, a name linked to the sparkling flood water that covers the meadows beside the Loddon. In Tudor times the manor was among those held by Catherine of Aragon, who is said to have stayed there, possibly on visits to Reading Abbey. Charles I reputedly lodged at Goodrest House in the Civil War. Parliamentary soldiers later wrecked the church tower while trying to dislodge Royalists sheltering inside and a brick tower took its place. The Church of St Mary is Grade I listed among six listed buildings near the village centre and is the burial place of Mary Russell Mitford's mother and father. RAF Shinfield Park housed Flying Training Command from 1940 to 1968 and a cattle breeding centre worked in the parish from 1943 to 1991. The M4 of 1971 physically separated Shinfield Park from Reading. The Meteorological Office College then occupied the site until 2002 before most of it became housing.
Sport and leisure
Shinfield has outdoor facilities for tennis and football, along with a further sports pitch or court of unspecified type. Open space includes Coat Paddocks and Deardon Field and a number of children's playgrounds are found in the area.
