A short history of Corsham

In the Saxon period the land around Corsham was royal property and carried extensive woodland that was later cleared for farming. The name appears to mean Cosa's homestead in Old English and a reputed link with Ethelred of Wessex gave rise to the name Corsham Regis. The Domesday Book records the town as Cosseham and mentions a priory given to an order of monks on a site in Priory Street. The Lyons family held large estates here until at least the 16th century. The letter R entered the name under Norman influence and John Speed's 1611 map of Wiltshire still shows Cosham. Medieval wool brought prosperity that Bath stone quarrying later sustained. The Flemish Weavers Houses at 94 to 112 High Street are Grade II* and their name more likely stems from Dutch workers of the 17th century. Of 244 listed buildings near the centre four are Grade I: Corsham Court, the Hungerford Almshouses, the Bath House and the Church of St Bartholomew.
