A short history of Clevedon

The name Clevedon comes from Old English words meaning a cleft and a hill. Wain's Hill, about a mile south-west of the town, carries the remains of an Iron Age hill fort with two ramparts on its eastern side. The Domesday Book of 1086 records Clevedon as land held by the tenant-in-chief Mathew of Mortaigne, listing eight villagers plus ten smallholders. The parish later lay within the Portbury Hundred. The Middle Yeo and the Land Yeo, both modest watercourses, drove at least two mills, among them the Tuck Mills south of Clevedon Court, where cloth was fulled. Further mills close to Wain's Hill are thought to date from the early 1600s. In the Victorian period Clevedon developed from a farming village into a seaside town, with saltwater baths beside the pier and bathing machines on the main beach. The earliest mass production of penicillin was carried out at the Medical Research Council's Antibiotic Research Station in the town. There are 89 listed buildings near the centre, including the Grade I Parish Church of St Andrew.
