A short history of Winnersh

The name Winnersh comes from Old English words for a water meadow or pasture and a stubble field or park. Documents mention it from the late 12th century and it was one of four Liberties of Hurst parish. A farm stood on the site of Winnersh Crossroads in 1840 and the South Eastern Railway constructed the North Downs Line in 1849. The farm was called King Street Farm by 1899. A station opened in 1910 as Sindlesham and Hurst Halt and homes and light manufacturing premises came after the railway. The area was called Winnersh Corner in the 1920s and 1930s and the station became Winnersh Halt in 1930. The farm was renamed Allnatt Farm in 1935. A tractor importer used the site from 1939 and Hewlett-Packard had its UK headquarters there from 1975 to the early 1990s. Building the A329(M) destroyed most of Merryhill Green. Eight Grade II listed buildings stand near the centre including Hunters Lodge.
